EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME

All school going children are enrolled at Verulam Islamic School or the La Mercy Primary School.

Regular assessment of school performances is undertaken with the school. This takes form in monthly meetings. In addition, tution in certain subjects is also given. During 2009, 3 of our girls wrote metric and have passed.

GROUP WORK PROGRAMME

Under the supervision of the social worker regular professional group programmes are organised for those children displaying particular behavioural difficulties or those at risk. Some of the themes covered are interpersonal conflict management and teenage interpersonal relationships.

MADRESSA PROGRAMME

The Organisation having an Islamic ethos necessitates a regular vernacular programme apart from Mainstream teaching and learning on the fundamentals of Islam, the respect for diverse religious and cultural practices, tolerance, peace, caring and sharing.

LIFESTYLE PROGRAMMES

This is an ongoing programme that takes into consideration the development stages of the children. Baking, pasta making, samoosa making and painting are taught. Children enthusiastic about nature are encouraged to participate in the tunnel and chicken farm projects. To further assist the children a new media centre is almost complete and will be fitted with computers, internet access and books for the children's development.

REINTEGRATION AND FAMILY REUNIFICATION PROGRAMMES

This constitutes the thrust of the child and youth care programmes offered at Baitul Aman. The programme is founded on the basic tenet of child and youth care practice that institutional care is the last option for the children. As far as possible the stay of children at the institution must span the shortest duration.

RECREATION

Soccer and netball are the most popular sports enjoyed by the children of Baitul Aman. Plans are on hand to improve the playing area at the home by moving the tunnel farm to a new area thus creating a field capable of playing all codes of sports.
A regular feature is the participation of our children in inter school sports organised by the association of Muslim schools.

HOLIDAY PROGRAMMES

As much as the organisation has tried to encourage children to be reunited with families during the vacation period, this seldom materialises into resounding success. Consequently host families for placements during vacations are screened by the Organisation’s social worker. Structured holiday programmes are also organised in and around the Durban and Midlands areas.

VISITORS

The children are pleased to received visitors at the home. The visitors spend time with the children and also provide meals and interact in many ways.
