Born on the
28th of August 1923 in the Northern KwaZulu Natal town of Elandskop (North
of Pietermaritzburg). Mr. E.A. Timol hails from a humbled background,
orphaned at the age of seven. He moved to Durban in the 1940’s.
During these early years in Durban, he became instrumental in establishing and assisting family & friends with business initiatives during which time he became closely associated with the A.I. Kajee Family Trust business where he was employed. In 1959 Mr. E.A. Timol together with colleagues decided to get involved in affairs of Darul Yatama Wal Masakeen. Whilst Mr, E.A. Timol took serious social welfare responsibilities of Darul Yatama, he was simultaneously involved in numerous other Trusts and Institutions. Natal Muslim Council – Treasurer, Muslim Institute – Hon. Secretary, Natal Table Tennis Board – Secretary, Anjuman Islamic School – Secretary/Grantee, A.M. Moolla Pre-Primary School – Administrator/Grantee, Pakistan Celebration Committee – Executive Member, Natal Education School Building – Executive Member, Asherville Ratepayers Association – Member, Muslim Employees Society – Foundation Member & Chairman. He played a significant and pivotal role in establishing the accord between the Ulamas which today serves as reference. In the late 1990’s he was so saddened by the plight of our Senior Citizens and lack of interest of the community in addressing the needs of the Senior members of our society, that he campaigned for the establishment of Baitul Hifazat and Baitul Firdous. The Baitul Aman’s Children’s Home occupied a very special place in his heart where he spent many years at the detriment of his health and family to see that the orphaned and destitute children were well kept and cared for. His concept of welfare services was unique, in that he always maintained a way forward, creating a productive society & equipping disadvantage and handicapped children and persons with skills which may assist them in becoming contributing members of society. This concept gave birth too many sustainable programmes at the Children’s Home, like the tunnel farm, chicken farm, etc. In the year 2000, Mr. E.A. Timol was severely moved by the plight and condition of the abandoned babies and those inflicted with HIV and AIDS, that he wanted to create a facility at Baitul Aman to cater for abandoned babies. Some found it strange and difficult to work with this unique individual who possessed such enormous passion, whilst others who worked close to him observed the immense positive influence & impact that emanated from the tireless and dedicated servant of Islam. After his retirement from A.I. Kajee for whom he served many years with distinction, he assumed a challenging task at the Darul Yatama Head Office on a voluntary capacity. Through his foresight and expertise the Organisation benefitted immensely. His acumen, ability and intervention have assisted many societies, organisations, trusts, families and individuals who drew from his reservoir of knowledge. His famous words were “you have to be ‘clean and neat’ in your dealings as you are accountable and answerable to the public”. During his lifetime, he was recipient of many community awards in recognition of his sterling service to the social, cultural & spiritual upliftment of the Ummah. His accomplishment and influence within this social fraternity has impacted positively on the lives of many. His perseverance towards attaining social justice for all will always be admired & cherished amongst those who he served and amongst those who have been closely associated with him. May the Almighty Allah (SWT) grant him Jannatul Firdous. Ameen. |
